And in fact, entering Villa Mapelli I am always pervaded by a sense of well-being that accompanies me in the rediscovery of the beauties of this magical place in the heart of Varenna, the most romantic village on Lake Como.Layer after layer of wonders which the artist Romeo Sozzi, owner of the house – and founder of Promemoria, an Italian high-end furniture company – wanted to accentuate and remodel, through the colours and the peculiarity of the furnishing accessories. The walls and the setting of Villa Mapelli are able to exert a subtle but indelible charm, so much so that it is here that Antonio Fogazzaro – a friend and frequent guest of Luisa Venini, one of the first owners of the villa – drew the decisive inspiration for the drafting of his masterpiece ” Piccolo mondo antico “.

Inside the house, I am immediately attracted to the large table full of books and reproductions of frogs, animals loved by Romeo because they represent the “courage of change and metamorphosis”. My gaze then ends up getting lost in the huge window that frames the view of the lake, the original source of inspiration for the construction of the villa in the seventeenth century.

Outside – just like Alice in Wonderland – I like to lose myself in the labyrinth of the garden paths, which hide and reappear, without interruption, leading to the glimpse of the magic of the belvedere with its gazebo, the arches of roses, the caves.

Villa Mapelli invites me to explore its spaces, to draw new trajectories to understand it more and more, in a continuous and cinematic inside-out.

It is like a narrative full of references and poetic images.

It is worth reading it, and above all it is worth living it.

Villa Mapelli, formerly Villa Venini, stands on the edge of the old village of Varenna, at the foot of the Alps. The central block of Villa Mapelli was commissioned by an inhabitant of Bellano, who lived there approximately 40 years in the 17th century; the two side wings were added in the 18th century.

In 1876, the villa was owned by a lawyer called Giacomo Venini and his wife Luigia, familiarly known as Luisa Campioni. The Venini couple brought fame and splendour to the villa and biographers agree that the Venini household attracted a most amusing and bizarre group of people, with music played from morning to night, including moonlight serenades conducted by the famous cello player Gaetano Brago. Puppet performances and séances were also popular with Luisa and her guests, who included the musicians Wagner, Liszt and Verdi and the writer Antonio Fogazzaro, a close friend of Luisa’s. Often a guest of the Venini family, they probably inspired his The Little World of the Past and the drowning of a little girl in the villa harbour, narrated in the novel, maybe linked to the death of Marco, his host’ teenage son.

The villa and garden remained in Venini possession until 1903 when it became Villa Angerer and then, in 1926, a holiday home of The Ottorino Mapelli family, whose name it still bears. The subsequent owner was Alberto Gallina, a relative of Ottorino, who took up permanent residence there.

In 2002, the villa was purchased by the artist Romeo Sozzi – a cabinet market and designer– who spent six years supervising the works personally. Protected by the Fine Arts Department, the building is unaltered on the exterior. Inside, it retains ceiling stuccowork and 17th century fireplaces in red Ticino marble. Some spaces have been opened to create new perspectives and enjoy the magnificent views of the lake but without eroding the magical atmosphere that has hung in the air for 400 years.
