OTHERS
I slowly drive along the scenic route that runs along the lake; I go up the steep hairpin bends of the Intelvi Valley and find myself on a narrow, winding asphalt road that cuts through a leafy wood and I almost lose my sense of direction.
I can smell the scent of nature and I am enveloped in an atmosphere which recalls an ancient world and untouched traditions: the wash-houses overlooking the street, the small village with its stone buildings, the cobbled narrow streets, the church in the small square …
I walk through the small village of Pigra searching for Villa Peduzzi; I know it should be around here, yet I still can’t see it …
There it is, finally!
Elegant, in perfect Art Nouveau style, it proudly dominates Lake Como from its plateau: it reminds me of a delicate and beautiful mountain flower.
The contrast between a villa that brings to mind the lightness and the light-heartedness of the Belle Epoque and the simple, rural context in which it is inserted – a place where frivolities have little space – is really fascinating to me.
Before entering, I linger on the main terrace and my eyes fill with an immense panorama which encompasses the blue of the lake and the green of the surrounding mountains.
It is love at first sight for this home, secluded but not isolated: I can decide to take a boat trip thanks to the nearby cable car which will take me to the shores of the lake in a few minutes, or undertake the challenge of long walks in the mountains, either on foot or by mountain bike: just spoiled for choice.
But above all, from up here I seem to have all the beauty and tranquility of “my” lake at my disposal and, perhaps, to better grasp even its essence.

This classic Art Nouveau villa was built in a dominant position overlooking Lake Como at the turn of the 20th century and completed in 1909. It was originally the residence of the family of Rocco Peduzzi, a well-known Italian engineer whose plans included the construction of a new railway line between Milan and Rome and a connecting road between Pigra and Blessagno. Like the numerous Art Nouveau villas built by wealthy families on the shores of the lake at the beginning of the twentieth century, Villa Peduzzi incorporates the typical tower which distinguishes this architectural style.
Magnificent frescoes richly decorated all four floors. Scenes from Lake Como and the original watchtower which occupied this important vantage point hundreds of years before the construction of Villa Peduzzi can still be seen in the classical style frescoes on the ground floor.
