Built in the 16th century, the Villa was bought by the Dukes of Serbelloni in the 18th to be their summer escape from the heat of Milan. In this age of exuberant decadence, no expense was spared to make the Villa the most spectacular on the Lake.

The façade was redesigned in the Neoclassical style and the two side wings, impressive staircase, marble balconies and characteristic blue shutters – reflecting the lake waters – were added. Great artists were brought in to embellish the halls and rooms with elaborate stuccoes and frescoes resulting in spectacular period décor.

Outdoors a grand Italian garden with four blossoming parterres was planted, a romantic stone mooring was built and an impressive cast iron gate was installed.

In a sign of their affection for the Villa, the Serbelloni inscribed the words Villulae Quietem, the stillness of a small villa, above the entrance. A statement as true today as it was then.

Once Villa Sola Cabiati of Tremezzo was known as “La Quiete”:

a name – still alive in popular culture – that I really like because it perfectly describes the feeling of peace and well-being that can be achieved by staying in this villa, one of the most refined and rich in the history of Lake Como.

It is not by chance that that it was a great poet who wanted to call it that.

Giuseppe Parini, struck by the natural and artistic beauties and the refined atmosphere of the holiday home of the Serbelloni dukes, was certain he had found Paradise.

Personally, I cannot find it hard to believe when I find myself in front of the majestic iron gate with gilded friezes and mythological statues, and when I admire the facade with marble balconies and the blue shutters that pay homage to the lake.

And I must admit that all the harmony and proportion that I see walking through the magnificent Italian garden makes me feel at peace.

Inside I notice that all the history, culture and splendor of the past seem to have remained intact in each room  and simply enhanced by a respectful restoration.

As if all this were not enough, I learn that the furnishings of the apartment where Napoleon stayed with his wife Josèphine Beauharnais were secretly transported here – and saved from the fire of Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan.

The thrill of a private visit to this small “secret museum”, with a member of the Sola Cabiati family as guide, is an exclusive dedicated to you lucky guests.
